A few days ago, while surfcrastinating I came across this story of Donna Simpson in the 'oddstuff' section of the local news site and didn't quite know what to think. I'm still not sure.

This woman, who currently weighs about 275kg, is on a mission. She wants to attain her goal weight of 450kg and become, officially, the worlds fattest woman. Something really bothers me about this. I am 100% for fat acceptance. Whatever size you are, if you like it and it works for your lifestyle then that's wonderful. I personally have a preference for wanting fat people to care about their health, and some do, but for those that don't, o.k. that also is your choice. I also don't really have any negative thoughts about the fact that Donna Simpson makes her living as 'Treasure' on the Supersized Bombshell website, where men (and perhaps women too) pay to watch her do stuff like eat fatty food, and so on. However, I do have some problems with this particular person and her mission.

For a start, in one interview she states that she is generally healthy. But, actually she already has diabetes and has to use a mobility scooter. If she already has diabetes then I'm pretty sure that she won't make it into the Guinness Book of World Records because she will die before she gets that fat. That bothers me a lot. In what world does the international media make a major story out of the fact that some woman has announced that she is going to rather publicly and slowly kill herself? At 450k she will undoubtedly be bedridden and dependant. Why would you want to do that to yourself? And, even more importantly, why would you do that to your children, one of whom looks quite young, maybe 4 or 5? I'm still thinking about it. It's too sad. I hope she reconsiders. Eating yourself to death doesn't seem to me to be the best use of a life.

  1. This is exactly the same as starving yourself to become the worlds thinnest person.

Both ideas make me uncomfortable, so I can see why you're a bit torn between, I feel the same way!

  2. Yes! I didn't think of that but you are right! In such a case there is a word for it, right? It's a mental illness..

  3. Oh my god, when I heard it this story left me with my mouth hanging open, my head shaking and my heart aching. Exactly as you said - what a waste of a life. Maybe that's the only achievement she think she can reach?
Personally I find exercise much more fulfilling!!

I love to hear from you! Tell me what's in your brain, your heart or your dinner plate :D.
